1966 - 1969

Year

Events

1966 School of Allied Health Sciences established with five programs: Medical Technology bachelor, Radiologic Technology certificate, Cytotechnology certificate, Inhalation Therapy certificate, and Nurse Anesthetist certificate
1966 Medical College Board of Trustees appointed George F. Stevenson, MD, Director of the Medical College School of Technology and Director of the proposed School of Certified Laboratory Assistants on October 14, 1966
1967 First seven Nurse Anesthetists graduated
1967 Practical Nurse certificate program accepted first class of 25 students in August 1967
1967-1968 Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate program initiated
1968 Medical Record Administration bachelor program started
1967-1968 Histologic Technology certificate program initiated
1968 First Bachelor of Science degrees awarded to one in Cytotechnology and four in Medical Technology
1968 Operating Room Technicians certificate program established
1969 School name changed to College of Allied Health Sciences
1969 Dental Assisting certificate program established
1969 First class of Medical Record Administration bachelor degree students started in September 1969

1970s

Events

1970 Inhalation Therapy name changed to Respiratory Therapy
1971 Respiratory Therapy, Radiologic Technology, Medical Laboratory Assistants, and Dental Assisting all converted to associate degree programs
1972 Physician Assistant Program held its first class
1973 Nurse Anesthetist program became a post-baccalaureate certificate program named Anesthesia for Nurses
1973 Physical Therapy program initiated
1973 Applied Engineering in Health program with Department of Surgery initiated
1973 South Carolina MEDEX Program established to train physician assistants with Department of Family Practice
1974-1975 College divided into upper and lower divisions. Upper division offered bachelor degree and post bachelor certificate studies. Lower division included associate degree and certificate programs cosponsored by Trident Technical College
1974-1975 Two year Extracorporeal Circulation Technology certificate program initiated
1974-1975 First Physical Therapy students graduated
1974-1975 Master in Health Sciences program approved
1974-1975 Opthalmic Technology Program established
1974-1975 Radiologic Technology Program initiated two options: 1) Bachelor program and certificate in Advanced Radiography to certified associate degree radiographers. 2) Basic professional option in Radiography, a "2 plus 2" bachelor program
1975 Dental Laboratory Technicians program matriculated first students in January 1975
1975 Master in Health Affairs name changed to Master in Health Sciences
1976 College of Health Related Professions Building opened on the corner of Bee and President Streets (77 President Street)
1976 Bachelor's degree program in Occupational Therapy organized
1976 Master in Health Sciences program established clinical and administrative tracks
1976 Occupational Therapy program (bachelor degree) opened and matriculated first students in June 1976
1976 Dental Assisting cojoined with Baptist College of Charleston for additional two years of study for bachelor in Health Education
1976 Dental Hygiene program initiated
1977 Master in Health Sciences program matriculated first class
1977 Occupational Therapy and Extracorporeal Circulation Technology program accredited
1977 South Carolina MEDEX program name changed to the South Carolina Physician Assistant program
1978-1979 Extracorporeal Circulation Technology changed to a bachelor degree program
1978-1979 Third track in Radiologic Technology, Radiation Therapy initiated
1979 Master of Health Administration name changed to Master of Health Sciences

1980s

1980 Fourth track in Radiologic Technology, Nuclear Medicine initiated
1980-1981 Radiologic Technology and Respiratory Therapy basic professional options discontinued
1982 Physician Assistant program loses its federal funding and closed in May
1982 Operating Room Technician program closed
1982-1983 Dental Assisting program changed to a 12 month certificate program under conjoint sponsorship with Trident Technical College
1982-1983 Master of Health Sciences program incorporated into new Department of Health Services Administration
1983 Bachelor of science programs in Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, and Dental Hygiene began offering non-traditional and evening classes called Professional Development Curriculum
1983-1984 25 graduate upper and lower division curriculums with 10 of the lower divisions conjoined with Trident Technical College
1984-1985 Master in Health Services Administration became its own separate degree from Master in Health Sciences. The Master of Health Sciences clinical trackers were Cytotechnology, Medical Technology, Medical Record Administration, and Occupational Therapy
1984-1985 The conjoint affiliation with Trident Technical College terminated and lower division transferred to TTC 
1984-1985 Histotechnology program remained at MUSC and merged with Cytotechnology program
1984-1985 Master in Health Science program received approval for eight clinical discipline tracks
1984-1985 Orthoptic/Opthalmic Technology program put on one year moratorium during new department head search
1985 Master in Health Services Administration degree approved by CHE for Charleston, Greenville, and Florence
1985 Radiologic Technology Nuclear Medicine track terminated in December
1986 Board of Trustees approved name change to the College of Health Related Professions on February 14
1986 Board of Trustees changed Department of Medical Record Administration title to Health Information Administration Educational Department on August 8
1986 Master in Health Services Administration graduated first four students in August and second group of 14 students in December
1986

Educational departments restructured into five schools based on interdisciplinary commonalities:

1) School of Applied Laboratory Sciences

2) School of Applied Rehabilitative & Support Sciences (departments included Anesthesia for Nurses, Dental Hygiene, Extracorporeal Circulation Technology, Medical Record Administration, Occupational Therapy, Orthoptic/Ophthalmic Technology, Physical Therapy, and Respiratory Therapy)

3) School of Applied Radiological & Imaging Sciences (included Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy Technology, and Radiography Technology)

4) School of Administrative Health Sciences (included master level departments of Health Sciences and Health Services Administration)

5) School of Evening Hours and Non Traditional Studies (included Professional Development Curriculum and Department of Special Studies & Continuing Education)

1986 Dental Hygiene program accepted students 
1986 Opthalmic Technology program reopened and added a year of training to the curriculum
1987 Dental Hygiene Educational Department admitted last class in Basic Professional Option program 
1987 Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine merged under chairmanship of Dr. Gordon R. Hennigar
1988 Department of Environmental Health established in September to provide education, service and research in environmental-related health issues
1988 Bachelor in Medical Technology graduated its last class in August
1989 Cytotechnology Educational Department reopened in June
1989 Bachelor of Health Sciences-Professional Development Curriculum approved May 3 to expand program to Midlands area

1992 Master of Science in Health Professions Education initiated in 1992
1992 Histotechnology Program discontinued August 31
1992 Physician Assistant bachelor of Science degree approved
1992-1993 Faculty practice plan was implemented
1992-1993 Master in Health Sciences Administration changes name to Masters of Health Administration
1992-1993 MUSC Board approved name change to College of Health Professions
1992-1993 College reorganization reduced number of departments from ten to six: Clinical Services, Environmental Health Sciences, Health Administration and Policy, Health Professions Education and Management, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences
1994 First class of 22 Physician Assistant bachelor of Science students matriculated in August
1995 Master of Health Sciences in Health Informatics track reactivated and approved
1995-1996 Master of Health Administration joint degree with Clemson approved by SCCHE
1995-1996 Master in Health Science program received approval for eight clinical discipline tracks
1996 Doctorate in Health Administration (DHA) degree approved by the SCCHE in 1996
1997 Master in Rehabilitation Sciences offered tracks in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology May 1997

2002-2003 Concept of new College of Health Professions complex to be built on High School of Charleston approved by the MUSC Board of Trustees
2003 Physician Assistant program transitioned from bachelor to master
2003 Groundbreaking for new complex on October 16
2003-2004 Cytopathology Center designated as a national Center of Excellence
2004-2005 Renovated CHP Complex Building C for Research Activities
2005 Moved into New CHP Complex 151 Rutledge Ave Building A and B July – August
2005 Doctorate of Physical Therapy approved by SCCHE
2005 M.S. in Clinical Laboratory Sciences program name changed to M.S. in Cytology and Biosciences March
2005-2006 Doctor of Health Administration program begins
2006 CHP Complex Dedication in April
2006-2007 Master of Research Administration degree approve by SCCHE
2007-2008 Graduated 1st class of DPT
2008-2009

College of Health Professions restructured into two departments: Department of Health Professions and Department of Health Sciences and Research

2008-2009 Cytotechnology program closure
2009 Ph.D. in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Program was approved and first class accepted Fall 2009
2009 Master of Research Administration program first class accepted Fall 2009
2009-2010 Communications Sciences and Disorders program closed
2009-2010 Doctor of Health Administration Interprofessional initiated
