Illustration in colored pencis on black paper by Thomas Hamm. The illustration features five scenes. In the first, a collage of COVID-related words, a thermometer, and an airline ticket. In the second, empty airplane seats, the wings of an airplane, and a key fob. In the third, the back of a man embracing a woman, a field of windmills, and a spedometer. A field of windmills and a digital sign with the message Stay Home #COVID19 are despicted. An email message alert is depicted in the fifth scene."

"As this all began to unfold, we abruptly learned our our daughter studying in Chicago would have to vacate her dorms and move out her things until the new term. I must have taken my temperature 50 times that night, fearful I'd read hot and be unable to fly.

Knowing I was heading into a hot spot, but having no other alternative, I boarded a 5:00 am flight for Chicago Midway. The tower there closed down later that day. I had the entire back of the plane to myself. Pick any row you like, said the flight attendant.

A woman at the National Car Rental counter took pity on me. Hated having to bring our daughter home from her new life at school, but so relieved to get to her. The traffic had not started yet, so we made good time. The sun broke through somewhere in Indiana beneath giant animé windmills. We had to stop in Knoxville for the mountains were too foggy to attempt in the dark.

Along the way, dire warnings on road signs... once home, as if nothing had happened.

Emails, self-monitoring, isolating and Spring continue unabated.
