Scoping Reviews

Scoping Review: Definition and Elements

A scoping review is a type of knowledge synthesis that uses a systematic approach to identify and synthesize literature on a given topic. Scoping reviews are conducted to map the extent, range, and nature of the literature, as well as to determine possible gaps in the literature on a topic.

Elements of a Scoping Review:
  1. Research team: including two independent screeners, a tie-breaker, librarian, and statistician
  2. Broad research question
  3. Written and registered protocol: OSF
  4. Inclusion/exclusion criteria
  5. Comprehensive literature searches of multiple databases: performed by librarian
  6. Screening and study selection: two independent screeners, conflicts resolved by third reviewer
  7. Data charting table
  8. Reporting guidelines: following PRISMA for Scoping Review checklist
  9. Time: scoping reviews can take 6-12 months to complete
