A scoping review is a type of knowledge synthesis that uses a systematic approach to identify and synthesize literature on a given topic. Scoping reviews are conducted to map the extent, range, and nature of the literature, as well as to determine possible gaps in the literature on a topic.
Elements of a Scoping Review:
- Research team: including two independent screeners, a tie-breaker, librarian, and statistician
- Broad research question
- Written and registered protocol: OSF
- Inclusion/exclusion criteria
- Comprehensive literature searches of multiple databases: performed by librarian
- Screening and study selection: two independent screeners, conflicts resolved by third reviewer
- Data charting table
- Reporting guidelines: following PRISMA for Scoping Review checklist
- Time: scoping reviews can take 6-12 months to complete
