City Council of Charleston approves City Hospital to establish a nurse training school |
1883 |
Training school opens as a diploma program named the South Carolina Training School for Nurses |
1886 |
Catastrophic earthquake hits Charleston, resulting in the closure of Roper Hospital |
1895 |
School is reestablished as The Charleston Training School a two-year diploma program |
1897 |
Hospital and Training School for Nurses established for the education of African-American nurses at 135 Cannon Street (later McClennan-Banks Hospital) |
1904 |
Roper Hospital assumes administration of the nursing program and the name changes to Roper Hospital Training School for Nurses |
1919 |
Roper Hospital Training School for Nurses is incorporated with the Medical College becoming the School of Nursing of the Medical College of the State of South Carolina |
1919 |
Program is expanded to a three-year diploma program |
1953 |
School name is changed to School of Nursing of the Medical College of South Carolina and Roper Hospital |
1955 |
School name is changed again to School of Nursing of the Medical College of South Carolina |
1956 |
School of Nursing building opened |
1969 |
Three-year diploma program converted to a four-year Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) program |
1970 |
School receives its current name, College of Nursing of the Medical University of South Carolina |
1972 |
First female African American graduate, Rosslee Tenetha Green Douglas |
1975 |
First African American man graduated, Joe Nelson Mitchell |
1979 |
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program established |
2001 |
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing program began |

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program established |
