Open Access Author Agreements

MUSC faculty, staff, and students may qualify for waived or reduced article processing charges when publishing in select open-access journals. This guide outlines publisher-specific open-access agreements and eligibility details. We encourage MUSC authors to contact publishers directly with questions related to author fees. As agreements and journal participation are subject to change, authors are strongly encouraged to confirm current terms with the journal prior to submitting a manuscript.

American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

Authors will not incur an Article Processing Charge (APC) for six open access journals. Standard page charges and supplemental material fees will still apply, and significant discounts are available to authors:

Corresponding authors at subscribing institutions are eligible to receive a 50% discount on the open-access charges when choosing the gold open-access option in subscription journals.

Patrons can contact MUSC Libraries to obtain the institutional ID to waive the author's fee.

MUSC faculty, staff and students can publish their articles open-access at no charge in gold and hybrid journals.

Corresponding authors at MUSC can publish an uncapped number of Open Access research articles in both the publisher's hybrid and fully open access journals. Has five journals.

Elsevier ScienceDirect

Search for journal titles on the Elsevier ScienceDirect website to determine eligibility. When publishing in eligible hybrid journals, MUSC authors do not have to pay an article publishing charge (APC). The cost of publishing open access is covered under the terms of the agreement. As a corresponding author, you can publish your article in a gold open-access journal with a 10% discount. Charges other than the author APC may still apply; please refer to individual journal submission guidelines.

The "2025 Springer Nature fully open access journals" spreadsheet lists the standard article processing charge (APC) for each journal. APCs are payable for articles upon acceptance.
