The second installment of the 2021 Waring Library Society Lecture Series will be hosted in conjunction with the Charleston Literary Festival and will feature Carl Zimmer on Friday, November 5, 2021.

The enigma of what it means to be alive has exercised humankind since time immemorial. New York Times bestselling author and columnist Carl Zimmer takes us on a spell-binding journey to the margins of life, from viruses to computer intelligence, seeking a definitive answer. He discusses his discoveries and the social dilemmas posed by the question with biologist Elizabeth Meyer-Bernstein, Dean of the College of Charleston Honors College.

This is a live event taking place at Sottile Theatre as part of the Charleston Literary Festival, and there are two options to see the presentation. For those following the Waring Library Society Lecture Series, by registering for the virtual option for this event, you will receive a link to a recording afterward with a limited time to view it. For those following the series who wish to see this event live, we have a limited number of tickets available. The first twenty-five individuals who register for the live event will have their names put on a list at the theatre entrance. There are limited tickets for the live event. Ticket reservations will first open to Waring Library Society Members and then to the wider community. You will be automatically registered for the virtual recorded release if you are not among the first live event registrants.

NOTE: If you attend the live event you must show evidence of vaccination or negative COVID test completed in the previous 72 hours.
