We look forward to having you join us for the 2019 Warren A. Sawyer Lecture. Please, note that this event has been rescheduled for Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 5:15pm. The lecture will be held in MUSC's Drug Discovery Building Auditorium at 70 President Street, and a reception will follow in the Porcher Medicinal Garden on the MUSC Campus. The event is free and open to the public, although registration is recommended.

Waring Historical Library’s 2019 Warren A. Sawyer Lecture will focus on the work of 19th-century physician and botanist David Hosack. Dr. Victoria Johnson will present this year's lecture, featuring her new book, American Eden, which both The Wall Street Journal and Ron Chernow (author of Alexander Hamilton) have called "captivating." American Eden was a New York Times Notable Book of 2018 and a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award in Nonfiction, the 2018 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Biography, and the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in History. American Eden unearths the pharmacological and medical contributions of David Hosack. Famed for being the attending physician to Vice President Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton following the ill-fated duel of 1804, little else is known about Hosack’s career. Johnson will explore Hosack’s creation of the nation’s first botanical garden, used to train the next generation of American doctors and naturalists and to conduct some of the first pharmacological research in the United States. Today, his former garden is the site of Rockefeller Center.

Dr. Johnson is Associate Professor of Urban Policy and Planning at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY), where she teaches on philanthropy, nonprofits, and the history of New York City. She earned her undergraduate degree in philosophy from Yale in 1991 and her Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia in 2002. Before joining Hunter College, she taught for thirteen years at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
