This guide is designed to introduce OER initiatives, help get you started finding OER, and explain creative commons licenses.

What are OER?

Open Educational Resources (OER) are learning, teaching and research materials in any format and medium that reside in the public domain or are under copyright that have been released under an open license, that permit no-cost access, re-use, re-purpose, adaptation and redistribution by others (UNESCO, 2019).

Open Educational Resources (OER) positions MUSC to “become the preeminent model for inclusion and equity...” by leading affordable learning initiatives in health professions education. Adopting OER supports our goals to “reimagine the learning experience to optimize educational value,” by replacing high-cost traditional textbooks with free or library-licensed resources, and to "forge innovative cross-campus partnerships to increase the scale, scope, and impact” of MUSC's OER initiatives.
